Sandie Jones performing "Ceol an Ghrá" ("The Music of Love"), the Irish entry at the 1972 Eurovision Song Contest.

Ireland's one and only attempt to send a song in Gaelic instead of English was also their least successful entry to date, only achieving 15th place (their lowest-ever placing until 1989). Quite unfairly, IMO, since I find this to actually be a very nice ballad with the Gaelic lyrics sounding beautifully and a lovely performance by Sandie (and isn't she just adorable?)

  • I can remember my primary school teacher, Ms Daly, teaching our class this way back in 1972 and the scary thing is I was able to sing along as I watched this.

  • What constitutes a "native" language? Irish is supposed to be my native language but like about 99.5% of the native born population in Ireland, I uttered my first words in English, I think in English and I'm so confused!!!!!.

  • @naughtypython Then in Limburg are very wrong. Catalan and Castilian are in different branches. It could be that exists some connection or "spraschbund", but no one derives from the another. You can see in Wikipedia, v.gr. "Classification_of_Romance_languages".

  • @xaruco Well, I'm just saying that according to the University of Limburg, Castilian is a dialect of Catalan, it evolved from Catalan. You can search for information on the web.

  • @naughtypython ¿What the...? Spanish is not a Catalan bastardization. Catalan is nearer to Occitan language (Provencal, Aranese, Languedocian, Lemosin, etc.) than Castilian (the true name of Spanish).

  • I wish the contestants would still sing in their native languages. I would watch the "Eurovision Song Contest" but as they mostly sing only English, it is not interesting and they should rename it to "Amerivision Song Contest"

  • @gmcfa002 me too
