I'm adding something new to the channel! Books can help with building a positive self image for our daughters. Join me as I show you some beautiful images from some of my favorites.

"Shante Keys and the New Year's Peas" by Gail Piernas-Davenport
*This book is also good because it parades through the New Year's tradition of several cultures including Mexican, Hindu, Scottish, Chinese. I love the fact that Shante--leads us through them all as she solves her dilemma and unites everyone in celebration of her own tradition. What a positive message for our girls!

"Honey, I love" by Eloise Greenfield

"The All-I'll-Ever-Need Christmas Doll" by Patricia G. Mc Kissack
*This one has a great message about what's really important and the powerful bond between sisters. It's a beautiful portrait of effective conflict resolution and touches on forgiveness.

"Satchel Paige: Don't look Back" by David Adler

"Rosa" by Nicki Giovanni
*The story of Rosa Parks

"Cornrows" by Camille Yarbrough

"I love My Hair" by Natasha Tarpley

I express myself best with pen and paper so I'll definitely be writing some reviews on the blog of the ones I like the best. Let me know if you have any requests!

Be Blessed!

  • That is so wonderful my kids love books...

  • @antionette35 Keep that interest burning in them--you won't be sorry! Read that story "one more time" even if you feel like it's killing you sometimes.

  • Thank you for these reviews...I am a multi-racial mother of 2 adorable multi-racial children and I am I am very protective of the images they get and plan on raising them as strong people proud of who they are and all of where they come from...I dislike reading to them from books that solely have non-ethnic characters....this is a great resource!

  • @naturalesque81tv I've done smut. It was suicide to my spirit. There's mountains of smut out there.

  • @CherishMyDaughter I'd LOVE to find a book like you described too. I have books in my closet that I got from Black Expressions a long time ago (when I didn't respond to my email lol). I'll take a look through those, but they usually sold smut. :( I'm never joining another book club unless I find a good one that actually sell good books.

  • @naturalesque81tv You can't go wrong there. Truth be told I've been longing for the same thing as I work so hard to give my daughters. I've enjoyed books by Francine Rivers and Ted Dekker for example, but I'd love to read a clean story--with depth--about a black woman like myself. I've read plenty without any substance.

  • @CherishMyDaughter I don't know. Recommend something. LOL! I'm serious. It's been a long time since I picked up a book other than the Bible.

  • @DrDawnMarie YES!

  • @sassiemommy Your welcome--let me know what you think when you read them!

  • @naturalesque81tv I hear you! We do have to lead by example. Don't be discouraged--reading picture books to them is still an excellent place to start. What kind of books do you like to read? I'm always reading something--what with schooling and all--but it's not usually for leisure.
