Philippines, Dec. 2006: Tricycle (essentially a two-stroke motorcycles with an open-air sidecar/cabin of sorts attached) was our main mode of transportation in General Santos City. It can seat five passengers comfortably, but are sometimes seen overcrowded with passengers standing outside the sidecar. As you can see, lanes are a quaint formality; vehicles meander wherever there's space regardless of lane markers, with pedestrians darting across the road haphazardly. If you're not a native (which I'm not) every trip can be a harrowing ordeal of near-misses and aggressive "crazy" driving. Also, the smell of diesel fumes from jeepneys and exhaust is overwhelming.

  • mi comes fajitas al lunes

  • ¿Sí? Bueno. Yo no como fajitas generalmente. Tengo gusto de tapas (los empanaditas son muy deliciosos) en el fin de semana en mi restaurante español preferido. ¿Eres español? ¿Por qué comentario sobre fajitas? ¿Tienes hambre?

  • the scent of diesel is from all the big trucks, those bikes rae gas two popperes

  • Yeah, so I've been told. It was a mix of jumping to conclusions and a language barrier that caused this misconception.

  • Its not diesel motorcycles. its the good old 2 stroke motorcycles we had in the 70s. they install a cabin around them to transport more passengers. however you might have smelled the diesel from the jeepneys. i really enjoyed watching you video. it reminds me of my stay there. my wife is from general santos...

  • I'll chalk that up to good ol' ignorance. All I (thought I) saw while there were diesel pumps. But after some thought diesel is rather impractical for a motorcycle. But that stench of diesel is thick! Thanks for the comment - most of my relatives live and/or are from Gen San, but some are from "nearby" Malita.

  • Really? That's pretty interesting. I was amazed at how many schools there were in Gen San. It's just a shame not everyone can go due to the cost.
