DVD available at: http://ccpvideos.com/sku/JG2d While Janie Gildow takes liberties with composition and hue, the precise detail and dynamic shadows in her finished drawings create a lifelike image of her subjects. In this workshop, Janie shares the design, shading and blending techniques that help her meet the challenge of realism and make the apples in her still life glow. This film employs and enhances the skills from Janie's introductory colored pencil workshop.

  • It takes a certain type of personality to have the patience to draw like this, particularly an intense need for precision/perfection. The goal of most "how to" art videos/workshops is to teach you something that you actually could do realistically. I think very few people could actually do this technique because they'd go insane in the process. But the DVD would be worth buying maybe simply because it'd be fascinating to watch her work. It is impressive.

  • @pumkin54 You are exactly right. It really does take a certain type of personality to have the patience for this. I don't have that personality, which gives me a greater appreciation for when I see this type of work mastered. It really is amazing.

  • too good to be true... i dont have patience for this... thats why im abstract.. Great work btw.

  • @mfirebird3000 Colored pencil *is* amazing but you're right on the time. :)

  • 1 question what type of sharpener do you use

  • @samuraigraffix Janie uses electric pencil sharpeners. She likes the Panasonic KP-310, which is unfortunately no longer available, but she likes other battery powered models from Panasonic and Berol Apsco. You can download a list of Janie's recommended tools on her artist page at the Creative Catalyst website.

  • perhaps one of the slowest techniques you can use... amazing looking though

  • That's what I call , the perfect "pixel eye"

  • I love water color. Thats my medium of choice! But than again I'm just an art student who is developing his skills.

  • @TheSoulreaper9 Learn how and it won't take you ten years. Coloring pencils have some cool effects hard to get with oil paint. Of course, the reverse is also true. Each medium has its own charms and challenges.

  • Is This a Canvas?I was wondering because I am Tired of Using ONLY paper.

  • Its cool...but it seems so soft. Nothing really pops out. You know...it just seems like the art they put up in doctors offices....

  • jesus fuckin christ that would take me a century to plan, color, and finish X_X

  • That's cool in All but I dont have 10 years of my life to spend coloring apples
