Only one game remains to be conquered on Super Mario All-Stars, so in honor of the re-release on Wii to commemorate Mario's 25th anniversary, here is the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2, otherwise known to us as The Lost Levels.

This game was basically the original Super Mario Bros. 2, but it wasn't originally released in America because they thought it would be too hard for American gamers, which doesn't really make sense to me. But it was finally released to America in the Super Mario All-Stars collection as "The Lost Levels." It was also later released in 8-bit format with SMB1 graphics on Super Mario Bros. Deluxe on the Game Boy Color, as an extra game called "Super Mario Bros. For Super Players." Eventually, the original Japanese incarnation from 1986 would be released unedited on the Wii's Virtual Console.

Some people describe this game's level design as "the precursor to Kaizo Mario" (a world-famously-difficult hack of Super Mario World, FYI). I wouldn't say it's THAT hard, but there are quite a few trouble spots, including a section in 3-4 where you have to be small to take the correct path through the maze, and a section in C-4 where it is next to impossible to avoid getting hit. They also introduced some new features, including Poison Mushrooms, which hurt you instead of powering you up, and Negative Warp Zones, which take you backward instead of forward. Also included are a couple new enemies, including Air Bloopers, red Piranha Plants, and charging Hammer Bros.

Unlike SMB1, there is no second quest. Instead, there are hidden bonus worlds. In the original 1986 Famicom version, You can access World 9 by completing the entire game without warping (including Negative warps), and once you beat the game 8 times, you can access Worlds A-D. But in this version, the lettered worlds come right after World 8 (or World 9 if you didn't use any warps).

Part 1 includes the first 4 worlds.

  • @MrEtcorbit I believe it was SMB2 in Japan. The western SMB2 is Doki Doki panic or something like that in the Japanese release. This is all old fuzzy info rolling around in my head so it could be wrong.
