NASA is saying that the objects floating around the tether in the Stubbs STS 75 video are debris and ice crystals. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PRmEbnVfUk&feature=related I produced this experiment to rebut those claims. What I'm demonstrating here is known as "Motion Parallax" as it applies to panning movements rather then tracking movements. Note: I fail to mention in the video that I had the focal length set to infinite, so all objects will appear clearly, rather than some being blurry and others being crisp, depending on the where the focal plane is adjusted. I also incorrectly state in the video that it's 1,500 units from camera to target, when it's actually 15,000.
Higher quality version of my video can be found here. http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/9/17/1438454/ATS.wmv

  • remember, the ice crystals are not in some way attached to the camera, so no matter what they aren't going to follow the camera's line of sight.. No matter where an object is, if it is stationary it will still appear in the same relative position of the tether at all angles that the camera looks. So this computer simulation is completely misleading to you, you need to use a real camera and use the moon as a reference point, or use a mountain that is a couple of miles away as a reference point.

  • your entire experiment is actually incorrect and that program is not telling you what you think it is telling you. Without explaining that I am going to give you a project to do the explain why you have made a big mistake.

Go outside with a camera, and find the moon, Now walk somewhere that positions the moon with a tree making a silhouette infront of the moon. Now hit the record button, and rotate in a circle.. and go back and watch it. Then you will understand the error in this experiment.

  • @frontenginedragsterd I would imagine that the tether lost all communication once it was severed? But they may have very well had measuring devices still working

  • @frontenginedragsterd Yes I figured that the charge on the tether made it look wider but wasnt 100% sure. I think David Sereda mentioned that the tether was charged too. So going on your hypothesis, then the objects around it may be charged as well and therefore considerably smaller and not a mile wide like most people say?

  • How can anyone trust NASA? This vid proves nothing. i'm still sticking with my first thought. this in no way debunks the inident because you didn't cover those most important questions...

why some objects stop change direction and just pop up out of nowhere....

  • @Raybo58

Are you going to accept that you made an error here or not?

  • what i never understood is the the tether is 12 miles long and how wide????? Maybe like 20 feet wide? But why does it look so wide 12 miles away? If the thether is 12 miles long and i take that scale and i measure the width it is like 1/2 mile wide./

  • So.. Scale has nothing to do with the relationship these things would have visually? That's the most flawed concept I've seen in a long time. And I've been watching videos on Uri Geller claiming he's real, but it's still fail.

  • Well?

  • Have you also considered the 6:1 zoom (NASA MLA Lens Assembly)?
