A snippet from series 4 of Grange Hill (1981) starring Tucker Jenkins and Benny. How on earth this joke managed to get past the editors is beyond me, although I suppose it was the 80s!

  • Political correctness hadn't been invented in 1981. You had to wait another 10 years or so when the politicians of the time started regulating what people could and couldn't say. Back when this clip was filmed, nobody gave such remarks a second thought and no-one got offended on behalf of any specific racial group, it was treat for what it is. Just a typical naff Children's BBC television joke. Remember, this was still the time when Crackerjack was popular!!

  • Your right, I understand that this can be used as an derogatory term with racist undertones. But would you not agree it can also be used as a shortened word, like Brit, Aussie, etc. Again I would like to point out that this is my opinion on what I hope is an adult conversation. I'm not racist and would never call anyone by this term because I'm aware it is deemed offensive. My opinion is it shouldn't be.

  • This was TAME, compared to the language that was really used in schools around that time. Believe me! They couldn't possibly show how BAD it was in some schools.

  • I'm not sure why, but noticed an argument in discussion re the word paki. I have to agree, I fail to see why this is racist. Hence, Brit, British. Aussie, Australian. Yankee, American. Basically a term for nearly every country in the world. Whether it be shortened or slang. Even terms for parts of a country like brummie being Birmingham.
