Edifier S730 Vs Logitech z-5500 - The Test We All Wanted To See
By truebassb

truebassB — March 22, 2010 — Just a test comparing the Edifier Signature (s530,s550,s730,s750) with the Logitech z-5500.

Not much to say,not much to show, mostly because in the video you won't hear any difference of the how both speakers sounds like.
There is a little difference, the Edifier speakers are have more alive frequency response, but you can hear it only if you have good speakers (not Logitech),or good headphones.

In this test i aimed the mid-range frequency response, and the bass.

I noticed that the Logitech speakers cannot produce any midrange frequency with the ease the Edifier speakers do.

The Logitech amplifier is well made, but not calibrated for this kind of speakers, because for example it sends signal below 100hz to the satellites, but it's bad because the plastic cabinet does not tune to these frequencies, and the result is bad.

The Edifier amplifier can send signal down to about 130-150hz to the speakers (150hz-22khz official specs),but the wooden cabinet plus the two way crossover, makes it sound as good as it designed to be.
However i found the Edifier speakers sounding a little bit confusing when the mid and low range frequencies are adjusted from the control pod,and the speakers are playing low frequencies.
Also when the volume is nearly max,the THD level is the same as the Logitech speakers, but the Midbass driver (130-150hz to 10-12khz) is producing a little bit of intermodulation distortion, and the tweeter sounds sharp.

The Logitech speakers on nearly max volume also producing intermodulation distortion and high audible levels of THD,and the lack of tweeter plus the inefficient cabinet, makes a result of sharp sound in all the frequency ranges (at least those who can play).

The enclosure of the subwoofer of the Logitech and Tangband driver are not the best combination for a subwoofer.

The result of this subwoofer is loose uncontrollable bass (it's too boomy),not too deep, and the subwoofer also due to enclosure design can play midrange frequencies,at least it gives you the feeling of a "tinnitus" of midrange frequencies.
I noticed the same thing with the Edifier subwoofer when i removed the one of the two passive radiators.

The Edifier subwoofer is producing more tight bass, deeper and cleaner, and it also fills my room with bass better, because of the Passive Radiator Enclosure.

With the Edifier s550 (5.1) costing this moment 250-300 euros (338-406 USD),
and the Logitech z-5500 (5.1) going from 300 euros to 500 euros (406-677 USD),
i found the Edifier speakers cheaper and more comfortable to ear for a better listening experience,
without the need to jealous something from the z-5500,because they are providing you louder sound than the Logitech, better frequency response, and are suitable for all the Multimedia applications, plus casual music listening.

Edifier - 8* Best Buy at this Price
Logitech - 4* A little bit Overrated and Overpriced

All the sounds played are royal free and downloaded from Soundsnap.com

The song called "No Frills Comparsa"
which is used on the last test and the outro founded at Incompetech.com

  • Guys the video is by edifier and they want to make money ok? They'll never admit that the z5500 is a better system than the S730

  • Hello Rom69trik,

Please note that Edifier does not endorse reviewers nor write our own reviews. We provide units like this for review, of which the outcome is up to the reviewer as seen in this video.

As audio tastes and preferences differ from one person to another, the final outcome of which is better is solely up to the individual taste. We strongly encourage each interested person to test products in person to what suits their needs.

    Further enquires please email: enquiry@edifier.com

  • yes Mr. truebassB, your video is nicely done! thank you for your review!

  • wich camera did u use to do this video

  • I don't get YT speaker reviews that play music. Do people honestly hear any difference? All I can hear are the terrible compression artifacts. :D

  • @rom69trik Both are shit

  • @MrMigs08 ... The sound, the Edifier is punching out a very tight lower range frequency and with the passive woofer ports, the lower range is both unbelievably clean (Not floppy at all) and providing a very full experience, along with this, the satalites are of a good quality in my oppinion, the two way combo is the best route for audio experience because the individual frequency can be offloaded on both, which imo is ideal for music, i'm already falling in love with this set, reccomend to any1!

  • Just got myself a set of s730'S after moving from my previous logitec set (Before creative system which is still alive and well and providing some fo the best sound in the house still!)

Simply put, the first thing i noticed about the Edifier was, it doesnt seem as bassy as my logitecs (Im not ramping the edifier up full until i've broken them in), its not loud in the sense i was on about it was BOOMY!

But i'm sat here now understanding what the logitecs were missing, its the fullness of....

  • @davitsk1 z5500

  • @sergyelen Lol in denmark the edifer is around 80 euros cheaper tha s730. Which one did you buy? - i can't decide either.

  • EDIFIER :-**** !

  • I just got the Logitech z906 (the upgrade from the z5500) after auditioning the Edifier s730, and I must say that with its onboard Dolby Digital and DTS decoder, the z906 is much better for movies and gaming (which are what I bought it for), whereas the s730, with its fuller bass and midrange, is the optimum choice for music. And oh yeah, its subwoofer looks much, MUCH sexier than the s906's.
