This is the same pump as in the other videos, but 11 months along. It survived all the storms and high water (although the dam needed repair several times) with just a minor repair to the waste valve backing plate (changed out from plastic to metal). At times the pump was 2 feet under water but continued pumping.

I've added 10 feet of pipe in the drive line and the dam is slightly higher now, but that's the extent of the modifications. The pump continues to supply water to the slow sand filters that are under test nearby. I hope to soon produce some plans for building this thing to satisfy the many requests I've received. Thanks for the interest!

  • Will this pump work with dynamic head (moving water) as well as with static head (elevated water)? I have access to a swift moving stream but the elevation difference between one edge of my access and the other edge of my access is not great.

  • @asimov13647 No, unfortunately ram pumps can only work with falling water, not just flowing water. Sometimes you can run your stream through a barrel with a propeller in it and use the rotation to drive a pump or generator. Another option would be a Rife Stream Pump (aka Sling Pump), or a home-built spiral coil pump. Good luck!

  • How high (head of water) can these devices pump?

  • With 5' of drive head this unit can pump about 80' high, but many ram pumps are made of steel and can pump hundreds of feet high. Normally a ram pump can pump a good amount of water to a height 10 to 15 times the drive head. The higher you go, the less water you get, of course.
