hmmm... the block of wood idea is pretty cool. I was just about to click over to stew mac and buy one of the brass headed fretting hammers, all my regular hammers will dent the frets. I'll have to run through a couple tests with some scrap before I completely forget bout the fretting hammer but still thats a nifty idea...

this guy have no clue!!

To lay out the frets use .9439 times the nut to bridge length then repeat. The ratio works pretty good .

One thing I thought I would mention is that you will get the best performance out of the fretboard if you crown the frets after leveling them.

As our aussie brothers say "No Worries".
Pass it on to others as you go.

just a little advice... ive been building guitars for 14 years and i just thought id letcha know that it helps a TON if you pre-bend the fret wire to a 12-20'' radius before you install them. this makes the frets more likely to stay in and also provides a more permanent hold

Good advice, although on my Cigar Box Guitars the fretboards are flat. But I will remember that if I ever make one that isn't

Hi,
Just thought I'd add my two-cents worth. If you determine how long the frets have to be then cut to size and do the filing before you install them the job will go faster. And, it will look much better, as well as, take a lot less time. Happy freting!!!
