What should a community do with its unused land? Plant food, of course. With energy and humor, Pam Warhurst tells at the TEDSalon the story of how she and a growing team of volunteers came together to turn plots of unused land into communal vegetable gardens, and to change the narrative of food in their community.

It doesn't mater if it's tomatoes or roses, if it's not cared for, it's an eyesore. But some of the cases of front yard vegetable gardens, the owners are being prosecuted not for the gardens appearance, but for it's contents, among the reasons given "an eyesore" is one of the excuses for fining the owners. From the pictures I've seen of a couple of the more infamous cases, these were well-tended gardens, not eyesores. Google "tulsa bulldozed garden lawsuit" and you'll find a prime example.

I like the idea, but since government is now getting involved and imposing licensing fees, well you'd better snatch it back away from them. With licensing, it'll be a revenue source for municipalities, and they can tell you what you can and can't grow, and they may even require the use of toxic chemical pesticides and herbicides and then start hiring official garden tenders, etc. Viva la revolucion?

I think the whole idea is the efficient way didn't work so well. Efficient is farming acres of land of one crop with chemicals and pesticides and it kills. I'd rather be less efficient and more healthy.

Listen bud; you can eat cemetery food. I have no problem with what you stuff your face with. I however, won't be going for food grown from a recent cemetery.

My family had to have our front yard puled up to install a new water pipe to our house from the street. I live in a residential area in the core of my city so the space was only 4' by 6'. Instead of putting the turf grass back, we will be making a raised be

We will be able to grow, mint, chives, oregano, tomatoes and lettuce, using compose that we produce in a composted in our back yard from food waste.

I ask EVERYONE to try growing their own food, it doesn't take much, and it tastes better!

you're dreaming... what about the death beneath our soil for the past billion years? would you like chemicals to make sure no bugs or bruises are on your food as well? I can arrange a butler to serve it to you as well, possibly we can wrap the food in plastic to ensure that non of that dirty ol soil touches it as well... anything is possible princess!!

Why would people vote down such an inspiring talk/project?! Why would people make completely out of topic comments?!
