He didn't fail. Mac started to go downhill after he quit in 1985. Microsoft caught up in the 1990s because Apple tried to milk all profits from current products and failed to innovate much. After he returned starting with the iMac the Mac's marketshare picked up again. Besides, You are comparing a company's line of computers with a OS. That's like comparing HPs with Windows. Apple is selling the most portable computers right now.
