European Cup Winners Cup Final 1972

CWC was desbanded because of the CL restructuration.The second,the third and the forth classifieds started to go to CL too,and that weakened CWC.But until that CL restructuration CWC was the second most important Uefa competition,the most important after the Champions Cup.CWC was more important than Uefa Cup.

Blimey, I always thought that the third rated european trophy was the UEFA; after all, in order to get access to the CWC you "had" to win a home trophy (just like the Europe Cup, when it only could be played by the champions of their league), and besides the SuperCup was played between the winners of the EC and the CWC. That's why I always thought the UEFA Cup was for "the others".

Here's my two cents.

Rangers didn't actually win the cup in 71 to qualify for this tourney in 72. Celtic beat them in the final but as champions chose the European cup, making the semi final. Rangers got in the 'back door' as it were. (But fair play they beat some decent teams in that run) It could be argued that a Uefa Cup spot is won by playing 36 leauge games, while a cup is won by winning 4 or 5 games. Uefa cup teams are usually pretty consistent, I mean in recent years even Livingston have won a cup!

European champions cup,or champions league was and is still the most important Uefa competition,Uefa Cup Winners Cup was the second most important,and Uefa cup was the less important,it was for those who didn't win anything at the previous season,and a Uefa Cup Winner didn't have the right to despute the Uefa Super Cup,it was desputed by the Uefa European Champions Cup winner,and Uefa Cup Winners Cup winner.Uefa cup winner just started to despute the USC when UCWC ended.

In fact that's what I always thought (and still think).

Thank you for your comments my Friend I indeed remember that night in question as my late Father took me to all of the home games leading up to the semi-final but chicken pox ruled me out that night.
However on a positive side how many teams from the same City can boast two teams playing in two European finals in the same year,only days apart?
The downside for me was that your team were successful, and hats off to them it was a magnificent achievement.

Hi again dymond9999, those 2 European Semi Finals in 1972 were actually played on the same night. (Police wouldn't have that now) I spoke to former Rangers player John Greig at a Charity function some years back and he said that after beating Bayern, the Rangers players watched the extra time at Parkhead on a small TV in the dressing room. He admitted they cheered when Inter won on penalties! That was a difficult era for Rangers, Celtic were so dominant and that CWC win kept the fans going.
