On August 19, 1991, the day before Gorbachev and a group of republic leaders were due to sign the new union treaty, a group calling itself the State Emergency Committee (Государственный Комитет по Чрезвычайному Положению, ГКЧП) attempted to seize power in Moscow. The group announced that Gorbachev was ill and had been relieved of his state post as president. Gorbachev was holidaying in the Crimea when the coup began and remained there under house arrest. Soviet Union Vice President Gennady Yanayev was named acting president. The committee's eight members included KGB chairman Vladimir Kryuchkov, Internal Affairs Minister Boris Pugo, Defense Minister Dmitriy Yazov, and Prime Minister Valentin Pavlov, all of whom had risen to their posts under Gorbachev.

Vice President Gennady Yanayev took to the television and radio airwaves immediately after the announcement with other leaders of the coup and delivered a very sharp denunciation of the prior regime, but his weak posturing and shaky expressions during the speech immediately provoked the belief that he was not the man to deliver the public order desperately sought by others. Large public demonstrations against the coup leaders were already taking place in Moscow and Leningrad; divided loyalties in the defense and security establishments prevented the armed forces from mobilizing effectively and crushing the resistance.

  • @KGB1701 Yeah, you would so loved to still live in a communism dictatorship don't you

  • @Darkangel754 was libya invaded for oil or because gaddafi did something? it surely wasnt for the interests of people

  • @Darkangel754 Yes nato was sent in to help terrorists that is correct . They did slaughter civilians which are crimes against humanity . Gorbachev is to blame for this without that asshole turning Russia into a royal flagged UK-Colony the Soviets would never allow this murderous rampage like the brutal dictator Putin robbed Libya and laundered money for the west while USA and Nato mass-slaughtered innocent people.

  • I think Putin had it right when he said "Anyone who doesnt't miss the USSR has no heart, anyone who wants it back has no brain."

  • @Wyldstylist lol NATO was sent to assist the Libyan Rebels not fight them.

  • Fuck you Boris Yeltsin and your stupid puppet and toy Vladimir Putin! And Russia deserves these protests happening now in 2011, with Gorbachev to join! DOWN WITH PUTIN AND LET ARISE THE SOVIET FLAG ONCE AGAIN IN THE KREMLIN!!! Yeltsin destroyed the USSR, Gorbachev was too weak against Yeltsin and agreed on his terms and demands, and now Putin is a power hungry idiot! IF HE PLANS ON RUNNING AGAIN IN 2012, KILL HIM!!!

  • @Nickalispicalis Yeltsin destroyed only the Soviet Union, Russia is the name of the land, After the USSR was dissolved it became the Russian Federation

  • @Nickalispicalis He didnt do it alone he had Gorbachov agreeing to it and his lapdog Putin in the shadow. This was a staged coup to appear like the revolutionary defence is impossible but i say its damn possible see how Libyan people fight the most dangerous superpowers of earth NATO alone!! Respect to that .

This is just Brainwash so people obey the new Fascist government!!

  • @WheelieMacBin It's the same old story, my friend: meet the new boss, same as the old boss. Democrat, communist, fascist - the nature or driving ideology of the revolution doesn't seem to matter. The forces behind always assert themselves, seizing power, and the commoners are the ones to suffer. In the end, it seems, it is always easier for a few dozen men to seize control of a country than it is for the people in their millions.

  • @gell7 three words my american friend. Dont. Stop. Fighting. :) long live freedom
