I don't think Maurice Jarre ever got the recognition he deserved. Any movie he worked on he was able to capture the feeling of every seen on such a grand scale, even if it was a soft meloncholy part, it was still grand. And for me so far it seems the best music he ever did was for Beyond Thunderdome. It's the score I liked the best personally that is lol. Still I just can't get enough of this at all.

@ejb1972 don't hate it whenever you like a movie with the music in only to find out that the composer died? oh well, may he rest in peace.

Jarre's music did not merely accompany the big-scale films. It was instrumental (no pun intended) in the telling of the stories. The melodies stand out beautifully, and the fierceness of the scores command the engagement of ears that might otherwise be heedless of anything but the dialogue between the characters. The music makes you want to endure the hardships of the heroes onscreen, if only to be backed by the bold orchestrations!
