Your definition of AAC fie format is wrong it actually excels against LAME encode format, it's VBR quality range varies greater than an equal one in MP3 format. One only needs to look at a ripped 320 AAC VBR format compared to the 320 VBR V0 format in foobar2000 player software, the AAC varies greater than MP3 to reach 460Kbps! compared to 320 VBR V0 MP3 which stays at 320 and can't vary. It's the same with 128 VBR MP3 and 128 VBR AAC, the AAC file varies greater than MP3. Sorry but you're wrong
