This car was designed by Ghia Studios in Italy. Most likely they put them on because it just doesn't look right not to have a grill in the front, so they figured out how to make use of them which they did with some fresh air vents.

1) Styling. 2) interior ventilation. 3) front compartment ventilation; the gas tank was in there and it originally had no external filler. Horns were not the reason; the KG has a separate opening for the horns way down low on the front end.

Styling and the horns probably behind one of them, the older bugs had 2 and behind one of them was a horn, the other just to make the car look better.

i don't get why these cars have a front grill ..it haves the motor in the rear .its air cooled ....so why does it need the front grill

Friends,this is a brazilian ad,spoken in portuguese,telling that "only human hands could do these special lines of the Karmann-Ghia"...We had them produced here,on a different assembly line (by Karmann-Ghia of Brazil,very close to VW plant,at São Bernardo do Campo-São Paulo),from 1962 until 1976,though this model was made until 1971.
I used to live very near these two car makers,and it was soo good to see them fresh new,waiting for delivery...
