Here is a shortened guitar version of a rag by Henry Lodge written in 1909, arranged by Swedish ragtime guitar player Tom Thomason. It's played on my old beat up Stella Harmony and is definitely a rough-around-the-edges rendition. I just found out that there were lyrics to this song (found the sheet music on google). Will see if I cook up a version with vocals...this one definitely goes out to my pal Kicking Mule!

  • hey buddy, i have a chance to own a 50' dollar stella; exactly like yours!.

.&&. it is in beautiful condition.

but, i was worried on how it; played?. does it play well, .&&. do you feel as if the neck; is to thick?.

    let me know;

    thanks!.

  • @TheGilleyShow I love the way mine plays, the only thing is that is that you want to make sure it plays how you want as I don't think the guitars are very adjustable!

  • That's a very cool rendition. It has the sound of gittar authenticity, yet very clean. Cool that you can get that out of the Stella.

I hope to record my version for you. I used to play a duet with my partner in the '70s that was pretty faithful to Laibman/Schoenberg's, now I have a solo version that Andy Cohen helped me with. Had a chance to play it duet with Mary Flower in the student concert at Swananoa Gathering guitar week a couple of weeks ago.

A great tune and you do it fine justice.

  • many thanks for the commments. i played with andy in mississippi (he taught me a thing or two!) and mary at augusta this summer (man she's smooth!).

look forward to hearing your version! cheers

  • Seems like you dug deep in the ground and found a little treasure with this song :)

Great playing, but seriously, if you like old guitars, you deserve a better guitar than an old Harmony Stella. The market is flooded and I believe you deserve one of the old, quality brands.

  • Thanks for the message - one of these days I'm going to get a REAL Stella from my pal Neil (stellaguitars dot com), but that'll have to wait until my cash flow increases a bit!

  • stella guitar???

    i had same guitar!!!

  • Very nice ! A very great moment with you and your guitar . Thanks ...

  • Every guitar made has it's own personality. They just colour the sound plane in their own unique way and not matter how extravagant and pricey, or cheap and common, someone out there just knows how to make them all seem like a million dollars. Very well done. My wife brought home her old stella ('58) and I restrung it. Tuners need replacing, but such a unique sound, like a uke with depth.

  • I NEED HELP,,,I WANT TO LEARN THIS,,,WOULD PLEASE ANYONE HELP ME,,,THIS IS A FUCKING CLASSIC,,,WE SHOULD ALL LEARN TO PLAY THIS IF YOU PLAY THE GUITAR,,,IF NOT,,,DIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!

  • That was really cool !

  • Superb. I've never heard of Henry Lodge but I think he must have liked classical because it does sound "mediaeval minstrel" in parts.

  • A hell of a lot of rags are the same ol' thing, much as I enjoy ragtime. Frankly I found this refreshing, not to mention well-played.
