4hp of 1897. This engine originally ran on "Ligroin" a type of petrol (Gasoline,Benzine) using a surface vapourisor (ober vergasser). I only know of 5 pre 1900 horizontal engines, one in the MercedesBenz museum which is two stroke of the 1870's, two in a museum in Hungary, one in France and mine. Only two are inboard side shaft the othe three have a push rod system to operate the valves etc. Not one engine is the same.
When the engine powered equipment via a leather belt, how was it engaged/disengaged for start up? There does not appear to be any clutch mechanism.

Hi, In Europe they tended to use a fast and loose pulley system on the machinery being driven or on the line shafting driving the machinery. Slide the belt on the loose for starting then slide it over to the fast (fixed) pulley for work.
