  • Yes, this is truly pathetic. And to think that these guys no doubt actually think that they could defend themselves in a real fight. Hope they never have to, because they probably wouldn't live to tell about it. Too many dojos use "free sparring" as the the primary or sole basis of their self-defense curriculum. That's too bad.

  • @isshindg You are making way too many assumptions. Read my comment below "easy to criticize on the internet"... We obviously don't fight the same way at a tournament as we do in our dojo, we were just having fun... This was posted for your entertainment, not as a demonstration of our "street" abilities. If you would like to see a demonstration of our/my abilities, we can arrange that. Better yet, post something of yours so we can judge you? Don't just puss out by commenting anonymously.

  • That was the worst adult advanced belt sparring I have ever seen, looked like white belts, I ornge belt kids that have better sparring skills then these two black belts, that was imberrasing to the art of Isshintyu

  • Easy to criticize on the internet.

Visit the Isshinryu Hall of Fame this year, and we can set up a session with you and you can see first hand. I won three years in a row as a brown belt.

This was me and my best friend, as brown belts, each 6 fights in, making it to the finals that year. We took it easy on each other and had fun in the final fight. We beat up on each other in our dojo, breaking ribs, noses, toes, etc... no need to do that here.

Post something you have done that is better.

  • Thanks. Me and my buddy made it to the final fight, which is why when I had him 2-0, he tried to give me the last point... judges wouldn't have anything to do with it :)

Course, then I had to clock him one for good measure after that... Sorry Vinny :)

PS: That is his son high fiving me and his wife hugging me at the end... my wife shot the video.

Hopefully we can do it again this year!!! What do you say Vince?

  • Sorry, but I can only judge from what I see. When I fought in tournaments, I fought to win and I put my best techniques into the contest. If you're just clowning around, especially at a Hall of Fame event, why bother participating at all? You just make yourself look silly. If you train differently in your dojo, that's good. Glad to hear it.

  • @carlopicasso Don't judge a book by its cover :)

I believe we had the chance to spar in 2006 when you visited the OKC dojo (I was the brown belt at that time). You said some nice things to me afterwards... I don't remember my cardio being an issue :)

I'm sure you can attest to the fighting difference at our dojo vs. what we do at tournaments... we had some good no pads fights when you were there.

Hope all is going well for you.

  • All true, but pulling punches and kicks doesn't mean sacrificing form. One of the main points of Isshinryu is to snap your punches and kicks anyway - meaning pulling them back. One can easily pull a punch or a kick while still holding true to the form of the style. If you are someone who studied Isshinryu for a good number of years, I'm sure you would agree with that. No offense to the people in this match, but watching this made me feel like I was watching white belts.

  • There's a difference between fighting in an Isshinryu tourney and fighting an actual fight. You're not trying to kill your opponent in a tourney. As someone who studied Isshinryu for a good number of years I can personally vouch for how easily it is to hurt and be hurt. Isshinryu is a combative style and is not meant to be defensive. Pulling punches and pulling kicks makes you look like an ungainly unbalanced noob for sure but your buddy will appreciate it when he goes home with all his teeth.
