To maximize power you need to rotate on the ball of your foot (along with hips/shoulders) but pushing off that rear foot not lifting. Power is obtained from the ground up. Torquing the body (foot rotation, core/hips/shoulders) will help deliver the power to your opponents face.

Great videos! But I have a quick question, I'm a huge fan of Bas Rutten and in one of his videos he mentions that when throwing a punch you shouldn't twist your hand, you should throw it more like a traditional Karate strike because twisting your hand telegraphs it more. Any thoughts on this and which way is better? Thanks!

very helpful vids mate!

Speaking as an informally trained martial artist (i.e training across multiple forms) I really quite liked this video, yes the footwork might confuse some, bu, as is a principle in jkd, one must adapt what has been learned, and mix with what feels natural. Some forms discourage fighting in a "sideways" fashion, but fighting off the centre line of your opponent, and what said opponent would assume to be your centre actually has its benefits, such as opening up space and buying time. Nice vid :)

would stepping forward with your jab make it more powerful than stepping around?

mma fighters have different fighting styles than boxers for example look fedor and junior dos santos!

@UNCROWNEDMMAKING Well it kind of helps that boxers dont have to worry about take downs, kicks, knees etc. It also helps that they get to wear much bigger gloves and get to wear special shoes that grip the ground. You cant compare the two so eaisly and just say boxing is better. Also mma fighters have to train in so many disciplines including boxing, kickboxing, muay thai, judo, wrestling, grappling so cut them some slack. There are only so many hours in the day.
excellent set of vids, i wondered if lifting the rear leg on the cross would make you unstable, im no expert but thought the power was generated through piviting on the rear leg twisting hips and snapping the punch out? but keeping rooted? is this taught so your more mobile and dynamic?

@197922007 This is a very beginner set and over-emphasizes the footwork. As you get more dynamic at timing your footwork- you'll get more and more accustomed to pushing off your back leg.

Striking in MMA isn't advanced as boxing its really a shame, but in time it will get there

@UNCROWNEDMMAKING I think Anderson Silva, Kenny Florian, Thiago Alves, etc. might have some disagreement with you. It's not that boxing's striking is more advanced- it's simply different. The equivalent argument would be that "Quarterbacks really can't throw like Baseball pitchers, but in time they will be able to."
That being said, I do appreciate your input and participation. Please check out the site. Thanks.

Hi awesome videos but was wondering why you teach to punch while moving sideways?I see so many top mma figters striking while coming straight in.

This is a beginner video. The steps get more complicated in the later series. However, you never want to fight in a straight line. See the "Correct Steps" videos for more on that. Thanks for watching!
