My naked eye spotted the sun flashes from this 2"x3" plastic American Medical Kits Rescue Flash signal mirror at 22 miles four or five times in this clip, though the video shows that my (novice) friend hit me nearly continuously, thanks to the builtin retroreflective mesh aiming aid. This test did confirm the advertised "20 mile range", albeit under very favorable signaling conditions: clear air, a dark background for the signaler, and signaling nearly directly into the sun. The Rescue Flash mirror development story is about 40% of the way down here: http://www.dougritter.com/amk_psp_faq.htm and the mirror is widely sold (e.g., at REI stores and REI.com: http://www.rei.com/product/744441 ) Since US search and rescue practice calls for the aerial search pattern to ensure passing within 5 miles of each point, this mirror is fine, but if you want a brighter signal, consider a 3"x5" glass mirror like the GI issue MIL-M-18371E mirror we tested before and after this one, which was easily visible to my naked eye. If you are buying a 3"x5" glass signal mirror, make sure you get one with a working retroreflective aiming aid. Your camera picked it up, but you didn't. That's no good.
