HIV Saliva Test

This is A.J. getting an OraQuick HIV test in LA in September of 2007.

HIV can NOT be transmitted by saliva but you can test for HIV in saliva, which can be confusing. The test is looking for HIV antibodies, which are present in saliva.

We use this video during a SPEAK OUT presentation to demonstrate how easy and non-threatening an HIV test can be. For this test I did not pay, I did not have to give my name, and I had the results in 20 minutes (you can see I read a magazine in the waiting room for a few minutes while the results were prepared.)

Although false positives happen (1-2%), the test is still widely used. We are showing one example of testing in this video. Any positive result from an oral swab should be confirmed with a blood test which is the most accurate.
