Manga artist Shuho Sato (Say Hello to Black Jack, Umizaru), known for his harsh criticism of the publishing establishment in Japan, decided to open a site for himself and other artists to be able to publish directly, in electronic format, without having to depend on big publishing holdings. Here he tells us why he did it.
I think if his site runs properly, he will be successful. The problem with manga piracy is NOT people wanting things for free, its that publishers are not keeping up with the pace of the digital age, insisting on an outdated paper format instead of helping creators spread their work to a wider audience. Maybe it is time that artists cut out the middle men and publish works on their own.
