Elementary school student Sarah-Elizabeth Thompson, a fifth-grader at Dallas ISD's Thomas L. Marsalis, presents the winning speech from The 17th Annual Gardere MLK Jr. Oratory Competition held Jan. 16, 2009, at The Majestic Theatre in Dallas. Held days before the historic inauguration of President Obama, the competition challenged students to focus on the question If Dr. King were alive today, what do you think he would say about current events? Presented in Dallas and Houston by the Texas-based law firm Gardere Wynne Sewell LLP, the competition commemorates the life of Dr. King and is designed to highlight the cultural diversity of the community while recognizing and encouraging the writing and presentation skills of elementary school students.
I'm confused.... was this the winning speech as the title suggests? I thought Gerra Gistand delivered the winning speech.
Anyway, they both are talented, brilliant, young ladies with great prospects.

Sarah-Elizabeth Thompson was the winner of the 17th Annual Gardere MLK Jr. Oratory Competition, which was held in Dallas on Jan. 16, 2009. On the same day, the law firm held the 13th Annual Gardere MLK Jr. Oratory Competition in Houston. Gerra was the Houston event winner. The competition at each of these events was formidable, but as you noted, after watching both their speeches it is clear these young ladies each brought something uniquely special to their respective event.
