How do you remove the waste water from FT? Do you pump clean water into the Aquarium/FT and then use a overflow/SLO drain to remove the waste water?

I'm planning on raising tilapia in our cellar. I love your setup. My concern is the temperature swings here in Tennessee so I'm going to build it under cover. Do you use heaters in the water? If so do you have any recommendations for what types of heaters and pointers on keeping it steady? Thanks!
