So I finally managed to get my NTSC version of Star Fox 64 to run at 60Hz thanks to Steven. At first, I just thought it was too insanely fast, but now I love it! :P Going back to 50 or 52 Hz is so odd, it is almost unbelievable. It feels like the game is broken or something because of the slowness! lol.

Anyway, I have been struggling to actually record anything because my recording software refuses to record this new signal. Not surprising I guess since it is an NTSC signal and my recording stuff only supports PAL. At one point, I only got a blank screen when I hooked the N64 up to my Mac, but then randomly sometimes I get a black and white image displayed of the game. So when this happened, I decided to use a video capture program and just record directly off the screen. And this is the result.

Oh yeah, because I had to play directly through my Mac, there is quite a bit of lag between what I press on the controller and what happens on screen, therefore I missed quite a few enemies (didn't do too bad considering! :P) but that doesn't matter because the point is, it is running at 60Hz! :)

  • Yesterday I also played at 60hz, but my checkpoint wasn´t as good as yours (only 132 I think)^^

I also got a black and white screen and I´ve made a full video of it (it´s already on YouTube).

  • Yeah well you did your run on Main Game and I did this run on Expert so it isn't surprising that my checkpoint was better! ^^

Interestingly, my TV doesn't actually output the game in black and white at 60Hz. It does produce colours but they aren't all completely the right shade (best way of putting it) and I also get ghosting, but when your playing, you hardly notice it.

This video was recorded using my PAL EyeTV and luckily, I got an output but it was only in black and white. :(

  • Wow, this gives me a headache to look at...

  • Well I know that mine is now definitely running at 60Hz. I hadn't quite realised how much difference 10Hz would make. It didn't take me very long to get used to the new speed but that could just be because I find it easier for adjust and that I like things moving that bit quicker.

  • well, dimi says that his ntsc version is definitely faster than pal, and that it took a few days for him to get used to it. sounds like 60hz to me.

  • I dunno where you are finding these videos because all the ones on his YouTube account are on the PAL version I think since the screen text is German. Not sure about the Aquas video. Could be the NTSC version. Not sure if it is running at 60Hz either. Maybe he does play his NTSC version at 50 (or 52) Hz because he doesn't like the speed of 60Hz.

  • uh what?

dimi has quite a few videos on the ntsc version (area 6, sector x, katina, aquas, and total hits but total hits isn't up there anymore). but what I don't get is that those videos seem like pal speed a lot of the time even though dimi said that his ntsc version was faster enough that he had to get used to the faster speed.

  • The thing is, you won't truely be able to know what I am talking about because you do not have a PAL N64 playing Lylat Wars as it should be played just like I don't have an NTSC N64. So don't act like you know exactly what is going on. It is just a theory.

Also, I have had a look at Dimi's videos and they are all on the PAL version. I would find it highly unlikely that you wouldn't be able to tell that is is playing at 60Hz even when playing with the Passport. There is a very obvious difference

  • yeah I know, the 60hz makes it seem like there's more lag (but from personal experience I can say definitely that the lag parts are the same speed on both 50hz and 60hz).

also, keep in mind that all passport versions have some weird, random lag when playing at 60hz (which explains why dimi's ntsc videos seem like 50hz when they really aren't).

  • Oh sorry I didn't meant you specifically. I just meant you generally! :P Like, when I used to play my NTSC version at 50Hz. Hmmm maybe it does slow it down to the same speed. Hard to tell. How can you be so sure anyway.

Also, I'm pretty damn positive that there are places when there is clearly no lag when playing at 50Hz, and when playing at 60Hz, in those same places, there is some obvious lag.
