The first event to gather hundreds of child ambassadors took place in Hawaii in late 1999. The gathering was called the " Millennium Young Persons Congress" before the U.N. was given to use the name "Children's General Assembly". The congress received a written endorsement of then Secretary General Kofi Annan.
