(Latin Pulse: June 30, 2008) (Latin Pulse: June 30, 2008) Features former president of Peru, Alejandro Toledo. How is Latin America coping with the issue of poverty? From violence to hungry children on the streets, it is an ailment that has afflicted the region for decades. As Latin America tries to increase trade and strengthen its economies, it is still troubled by the lack of financial resources to fight poverty.
But as the pendulum swings back away from free market economies, some are starting to blame multinationals for promoting poverty for their own advantage.
Historically the financial health of Latin America has been directly tied to the strength of the U.S. dollar. As the dollar weakens so do Latin America economies, sending the poverty index soaring.

  • In Latin America, the rich get richer while the poor get poorer

  • Belle,

NAFTA = North American Free Trade Agreement, with HEAVY emphasis on NORTH AMERICA. Almost all of Latin America is in SOUTH AMERICA.

The current dilemma in Latin America stems from many decades of inequities forced onto the region by two main sources, the super rich of each country, AND the foreign policy of the United States. The US has been reaping the rewards in reduced internal labor costs for a very long time.

  • What's up with latin america?

  • Thanks to the Capitalism, Latin America still works as a menial. It continues to exist at the services of others needs, as a source and reserve of oil and iron, of copper and meat, of fruit and coffe, the raw materials and foods destined for the rich countries which profit more from consuming them than Latin America does from producing them.

  • That's a LIE.... and we can see it with the U.S. economy crisis, latin america got stronger everytime more... while U.S. recieves the poor people of the world.... anyway it doesn't matter what the north americans thinks, i live very happy in my country and a don't need to get out,... North americans somtimes thinks latinamerica is mexico... thay should go out of their country sometimes....

  • @199tinkerbell and where are you from?

  • hispanics and latinos are a mixture of all races... so you and ur bible are very wrong!!!

  • read eduardo galeano's 'open veins of latin america - 500 years of exploitation'

  • The way to end poverty in Mexico is the Megamerge Dissolution Solution. Click my profile for the url and read about it.

  • Ignorant American educated person, Hispanic, Latino or whatever term de jour you want to use, IS NOT a race but an ethnic group (culture) comprised of many races. Have you seen the Chinatowns in many Latin American cities? The Welsh enclaves in South AMerica? The arab neighborhoods? The Japanes influence? Fujimori in Peru? Germans, Italians, Irish, Africans? I did not think so, but I just feel sorry you are a product of the American public education

  • spain is also cursed. all cultures originating in spain are cursed. its regardless of the persons race or genetics. the culture is what has put you into bondage. the language, the customs, siestas. the lazyness.

  • It is stupid because hispanic and latino isn't a race. There are a grand number of Africans who were brought over as slaves in Latin American countries.
