A segment of 'Danses Concertantes' (1955) which was the first ballet commissioned from Sir Kenneth McMillan by for the Sadlers Wells Theatre Ballet ... by Ninette de Valois.

The main dancers are Annette Page and Donald McLeary.

Music: Igor Stravinsky

Designer: Nicholas Georgiadis

The talking heads are Sir Kenneth McMillan and Clement Crisp (ballet critic, 'Financial Times')

McMillan interestingly talks about trying to match what he saw as the jazzy, spiky, off-beat quality of Stravinsky's music in choreography - by, among other things, breaking up the lines of the body.

  • If its any consolation this version of the ballet premiered on my 7th birthday.

  • so we're both officially baby boomers. and at the time you were in your post sand pit period!

  • I think the lady is Patricia Miller, a stalwart of the Sadler's Wells Theatre Ballet in those days.

  • hi Buondelmonte123 - thanks for that - curiously i don't remember Patricia Miller from the sadler's wells - but i was a kid - must google her. cheers!

  • @nickwallacesmith I suspect she was a bit before your time.

  • hi Buondelmonte123 - yes, you're right - in 1955 the sand pit at kindergarten was my chief interest! cheers
