Many schools practice deep breathing exercises that dont help you block kicks or punches, they do help you strengthen your core, keep your posture and expand your lungs. These things are important especially if you are on your 3rd match and lactic acids are building up in your body A good system will have additional exercises which help in your development. It's just different. the most important thing is getting in a dojo and working it out and making it work. Good luck in your training

@PaulGappyNorris I see what you are getting at and I do agree with you to a certain degree but this sort of training works timing and distancing. 2 things that are so important for self defence Shadow boxing is also excellent but when people shadow box without focus or staying relaxed then it also becomes empty practice. Most of these drills don't teach you how to defend yourself but they do teach you how to react when you have to defend yourself.

@fohnjoster ..."it will help you immensely in your overall training"
Really? How exactly?
It has no bearing on fighting or self-defense skills - it's a simple drill, done for fun, in this case done very badly.

What a lot of people don't understand is that this is just good hard training. This is very hard to do, it's a timing drill where each participant has to move strongly, precisely and with power. You may not spar this way, but it will help you immensely in your overall training. This is tough to do well.

I'm saying you're 2/3 right.

"you don't need an 8th dan visitor to teach kihon"
i think you hit the nail on the head.

One of Shotokan's strengths is it's extreme focus on the basics, but sometimes (like in this video), I agree, practitioners take it way too far. Sticking with basic, high % techniques and refining them forever is great, but even before black belt the majority of your drilling should be with a realistic sense of timing, something that's readily applicable to sparring. I hate to say it, but all the videos of this seminar class are pointless; you don't need an 8th dan visitor to teach kihon.
when people actually perform the basic stuff as they should with a black belt then they are allowed to move on to other things. however the basic stuff should always be repeated so the foundation is kept strong. this is true within all martial arts. or atleast it should be =)

X-step sparring is a sparring drill. It never takes the place of live sparring in legit Shotokan. Every MA, boxing included does sparring drills.
That being said, I really don't see much value in this as a drill, aside from maybe getting beginners used to using those two basic blocks...except these guys are black belts. They really ought to be drilling in such a way they can directly use it in sparring. Oh well.
