The true reason why these elite are paid so high is simple and obvious:

It is a BRIBE for being in the regime circles and to keep them in check to Lee Kuan Yew and family. To make them turn the other eye when necesarry and to make them obedient and not critical.

@wendyneo maybe why the singapore people not appeased is a simple reason. you pay for something, your expectations is based on how much you pay right? but the Swiss standard of living promised; where is it? more good years? staying together, moving ahead? its just wrong to constantly use the mass media & national birthday to glorify a political party & censor the rest. Self praise alot, no? but when things not going their way, lots of excuses, climate, macro factors, terrorism etc.

@wendyneo suppose u had a chance to ask PM Lee this: ''sir why do u pay yourself top dollar & say it is to attract top talent but the electoral system ensures u (& possibly your party) holds on to power despite the opposition votes which is not reflected in parliamentary seats? (40% opposition votes but only 6 seats for opposition vs 80+ incumbent seats with 60% votes)

@wendyneo USA's obama, in for a tough fight to get re-elected. But any Singapore people in some point of their lives will wonder why the world's most powerful man (USA president) is paid a mere fraction of the PM of Singapore (20% as of now?) it makes one wonder is the S'pore PM that powerful in ASEAN or in Asia pacific? anyway, the USA presidential elections campaign period takes about 1-2 years, the primaries, democrats candidate elections etc.

@wendyneo unfortunately, they control (or influence) the law, mass media, education, military etc. if i am not wrong, i think HK head of state deserves his salary as he used to earn higher in private/public sector. for japan, they change PM like 5-6 times in as many years & after earthquake 311, i think this leader has quite a lot to do, kudos to last one for stepping down.

And to think these people who think themselves as 'elite' can be so proud of their corruption and abuse of power. Without freedom of press and credible opposition these elite are without accountability....In the end total control hurts the people and the country. If you give men their liberty and guarantee their rights with rule of law they will fight like no other and brings vitality to economy, culture and politics to the benefit of the whole nation.

Lee Kuan Yew family is probably one of the richest if not the richest family in the world. They command billions of dollars(est). So where does these billions come from? Only their salary? High as it is it will not give them billions. The fact is Singapore elite is ruling for the benefit of themselves. They are self serving unscrupulous people. There is never concept that to rule is to serve the people. Not even in the slightest sense. Singapore is a serfdom because the regime demands obedience.
