GMIT 4th Year Mechanical Engineering final year project presentations to third year mechanical and energy engineering students. The presentation day aimed to prepare third year students for the specialisations on offer within GMIT. They would have to choose between Energy, Biomedical or Product Design.
Six presentations were chosen, two from each steam, to demonstrate final year projects undertaken within each specialisation.
My presentation on the Design, Manufacture and Testing of a Solar Heat Engine Generator represented the Energy stream. My presentation was then later voted, by third years attending, as the best overall presentation. I was awarded a 100euro voucher for my presentation skills.

The presentation day took place on the 14th April 2011 in theatre 1000 in GMIT.

Thanks to all that attended and those who voted. Thank you to Carine Gachon for the video footage.

Regards
Mark Mc Dougall

  • Great project :) I have question about the Fresnel lens. How do you calculate the temperature achieved by your Fresnel lens? And is it a spot or linear lens that you are using? Thanks!

  • @TinyDav

Temperature is hard to calculate, you calculate the solar power (W) per area focused quite easily. When i purchased the lens the spec sheet stated 500-600C, as you heard from the testing i reached spot temperature up to 1000C, of course depending on the heated surface the metal temperature will vary greatly. id recommend getting the largest you can afford so your not disappointed :-) and test to find what temperatures. I used a spot lens, linear may prove better if heating a cylinder.

  • grrt work dude, I will also be preparing for my Final year project, even I was thinking of making a Stirling Engine. I was searching google n I found ur video, I am from India, Is there any way u can help like the PP presentation u gave or the booklet u wud have prepared, It would be great of u could Email me : sh_amaan@yahoo.com

  • I needed to ask that how do you define your controlling parameters.

What methods or techniques you employed to set dimensions of the engine. The stroke length, swept volume, dead volume and regenerator voulme etc.

I would request you kindly suggest a reference book or something that might be useful in our quest of dimensioning a stirling engine.

  • Hi,

    Good work !!!

I needed to ask you some questions regarding your project. Can I get your email Address??

    Thanks

  • Great work.... i was thinking of doing something like this for my Final Year Project and found your presentation.... awesome work man.... it would be a great work help for me if you give me your Project report so that i can understand it and make my final decision about the Project ...

  • Hi, am thinking of doing a similar project but I need some guidance for the design process of the engine. For instance, I am a bit confused about how to choose the size of the cylinders. Could you help/guide me in any way? Thanks! :)

  • Yes sir, tats the reason y I was looking for Stirling engine Information coz I have decided, My term has just started. the the presentation has to be ready before the end of term.................
