  • Hi, I'm a beginner lap swimmer but have been swimming all my life. My freestyle is only a month old and feels really new but I've been going to the pool 3-4X per week, watching people, and trying to get the hang of it on my own. Today after watching this video I had much more success than I have had in the past but the kicking feels unnatural. I'm always wanting to kick the opposite leg rather than what looks to be the same leg. Any advice or videos for kicking technique? Thanks a bunch! David

  • To stop kicking before you switch your side is a good idea. When you repeat it, you naturally move your legs along with your core body rotation.

  • really fabulous! i have a lot of this working from watching a TI video (which i lost!) several years ago and practicing. and recently my water feel has 'magically' improved. but i still can't get the kick down to two & am wasting energy there. when i use a pull buoy (TI heresy) things are much better (maybe no surprise). any advice on what to practice to get my kick rate down? i'll try getting my hand lower (1 foot) as you advise in the pool tomorrow. in the meantime THANKS for the great vids!

  • Better balance can improve your kick. Try to submerge your head when you swim. If you feel your hips are coming up by doing so, try to reduce your kick by 30%. You do not have to worry how to kick once you get balance and you can use your core body to get propulsion.

  • Before I say anything else I'll mention that I know VERY little about swimming and am trying to learn.

That said aren't you supposed to keep your feet kicking faster than the strokes with your arms? are there pros and/or cons to either option?

    Thanks for the vid

  • If you want to swim faster, you will use 6 beat (flutter) kick.

If you want to swim longer with ease, you will use 2 beat kick.

  • The best ever i saw

Because Sun Yang swim the same style about 1500m-worldrecord, unbelievable

  • This is how i would like to swim freestyle, smooth and silky

  • GREAT!!! what a motion!

  • graceful swimmer ! inspiring ! well done !

  • Shinji, this video and your elegance have been on invaluable help to me. In about a month of practice I was able to reach 9-10 strokes per 25m pool (i'm 1.97, mind u). My difficulty in is sustaining this effort for longer millage, but I reckon that's just a matter of stamina and practice.

Regardless, it has been brought to my attention that breast-stroking incorrectly can result in knee damage. I'm avid breast-stroker (my main form), and couldn't find information on this. How to avoid injury?

  • I try to use Popov's style. Very different from the style of this video. Why Popov? Well, it's the most ELEGANT style I have ever seen. This is more like Thorpe's style if I am not mistaken.

Great video and thanks for sharing!

  • TI has done so much for me, more than just improve all my strokes, it's actually improved my entire life and attitude. I've lost 50 pounds through swimming and I still eat a like glutton. Thank you.

  • Wonderful video. Inspired me to get my technique right once and for all. I have been swimming a lot (up to 1 hour per day), but my style is so bad that others have complained about it - LOL! . I'm probably spending 2x the energy I should. I so much want to look like that guy in the water one day. Decided to get a swimming couch and will show her this video. Time to practice!!

  • Arigato!!!.. This drill has helped me so much!!

  • Shinji, your video has been really useful to me. But I feel I have to improve the movements of legs. When I kick the leg remains low sinking while the other leg is floating. It is very difficult to me raise the leg soon after the kick. so my movement is choppy and make a lot of resistance to water. Any further advice? thanks. Francesco
