Part 4 of 7. Duai La, or internal balance of forces, makes Tai Chi Chuan the special art it is. Without this essential element, the form will have no inner structure. Michael Gilman has spent over 36 years teaching Tai Chi and Chi Kung. Visit www.gilmanstudio.com for more information and free classes.

  • When Cheng Man Ching does ward off his yin hand seems to be tensionless. Could you comment on that element of his style? In terms of Due La, how does his style counterbalance properly the yin hand is totally relaxed?

  • @lebarosky I am sorry I can't speak for Cheng Man Ching. I would think that his inner chi was experiencing Duai La.

  • Chris, The force is not equally balanced, only enough not to overdo it. In striking, I would say the force would be 75/25 - something like that. We do have splitting energy in Tai Chi that is balanced 50/50, but not in striking. You are correct about the energy coming up from the earth as a result of pressing downward with energy.

  • So, am I correct in saying that if I was going to strike an object (hard strike) with the back of my left wrist with 50 pounds of force, I would also be pressing 50 pounds with the palm of my right hand? This bieng that the real power of this strike is the result of the intent of my dantien and the press of my legs up from the earth?
