Newsnight Review is a weekly BBC arts critique show.
BBC synopsis: Kirsty Wark will be joined in the twilight zone by US film director and comic book writer Kevin Smith, comedian and self confessed geek Natalie Haynes, and author Jeanette Winterson.
Is cult now mainstream?
Have the geeks inherited the earth?
Is science fiction writing still in the ghetto?

  • Kevin Smith knew what type of programme Newsnight Review was and chose to go on, so he clearly likes it.

It's an arts show where critics dissect the cultural highlights of the week. Your all-out objection to the format reads very similar to Jeanette Winterson's objection to that action-oriented comic strip simply for being violent.

If you don't like what it is, then it's your problem to find something else to entertain you. Not for them to fundamentally change what it's supposed to be.

  • Why is the Twilight book in the Science Fiction section at 0:35?!?

  • That lesbo at the right was really annoying. Interupting and shit.

  • Didn't realise he was so big...wow....big guy!

  • @themanwholikesducks I'm glad we've never met. You sound very dull.

  • @ska2808 euh .... because unless vampires are real it's part of the science fiction world. Now it being good is a total different matter ^^

  • @ska2808 technically it would be deemed a Sci-Fi in the sense of Mary Shelleys Frankenstein being the "original" one. As a result you had books like Bram Stokers Dracula, and as a result of that Twilight. I think it fits the genre as well as fantasy, but it is sometimes difficult to specify as lots of novels fall under more than just one category

  • @themanwholikesducks Dude, you need a girlfriend.

  • @themanwholikesducks im not attacking you but what problem do you have with comics? also, there are so many kinds of geek that you probably fit into one category or another :)

  • By the way I just read Natalie Haynes new book and its great, and Jeanette Winterson is a great novelist so they know what they are on about!

  • Im a geek. I watch about 1000 films new to me a year, read cultural journalism, read classic literature... yet I don't smoke weed, I hate television (yes I saw the wire and west wing but its an inept storytelling vehicle), I hate star wars yet love real sci fi, I hate comic books and although comic book films may be good I can't get past their roots and don't understand them.

So am I not a geek? This rise of 'geek culture' makes me mad, its not a rise of geek culture but stupid culture!
