Anyone today who downloads a distributed kernel is doing so courtesy of the GNU GPL license (hence the reference to GNU/Linux). For starters, GNU contains compilers used when installing over 90% of your programs and applications. Second, it provides the shell we so dearly love (bash). Flavors such as Debian, Ubuntu, RedHat, Fedora, Suse, the list goes on..., all directly integrate with GNU.

I think you mean that Linux + GNU = GNU/Linux

Linux = Linux

GNU = GNU

Linux does not mean GNU/Linux.

The use of Linux to represent the operating system which has GNU applications with a Linux kernel is a popular manner of representation but it's not accurate. Just commonly used.
