THE BASIN AND THE TOWEL
Scribbling in the Sand: The Best of Michael Card (2002)

In an upstairs room, a parable
is just about to come alive.
And while they bicker about who's best,
with a painful glance, He'll silently rise.

Their Savior Servant must show them how
through the will of the water
and the tenderness of the towel.

And the call is to community,
The impoverished power that sets the soul free.
In humility, to take the vow,
that day after day we must take up the basin and the towel.

In any ordinary place,
on any ordinary day,
the parable can live again
when one will kneel and one will yield.

Our Saviour Servant must show us how
through the will of the water
and the tenderness of the towel.

And the space between ourselves sometimes
is more than the distance between the stars.
By the fragile bridge of the Servant's bow
we take up the basin and the towel.

  • I wandered what judas thought when he got his feet washed that day with the other disciples, knowing that he would betray his creator, and best friend.

  • Wow, I never thought about that... Yes, I guess John1262 is sort of right...

  • When I was at a dry place in my life, I started listening to Michael Card music and after a while, it was as if a well opened up inside me and water bubbled into it. I started learning about the Bible again and I could feel myself going deeper into the things of the spirit. That is what the musical blessing on Michael Card's life has done for me! His music teaches the Bible so well!

  • day after day, we must take on the basin and the towel.............amen!

  • This song is one of the most profound Christian songs I have heard in years. What a truth...

  • Really very beautiful playing and singing. Humbling.

  • "The call is to humility, the impoverished power that sets men free." The hardest line in the song for me. Humility comes hard for me. Father, teach me to be humble.

  • The privelige of power is service.

  • I loved the Brother to Brother album, Michael Card & John Michael Talbot.

  • @j3sfreak Sin does this: it darkens the intellect and makes the sin seems less grevious before it is committed and overwhelmingly more grevious after it is committed. The devil does this so that we will despair of God's grace & goodness. Yet, even if we have committed all the worst sins in the whole world, they are like a little speck of sand in the ocean of God's mercy and love.

  • @GerrieJohan Be rid of sin and death, but know that Life in Christ is not an excuse to break the law. We are to Love God with all our hearts, souls, strengths, and minds. We are to love our neighbors as ourselves.

"On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets."

  • @HannahTheScribe

Wow, how nicely said!! Yes! I can hear it too! :)

  • @sparkle88ify Forget the law..,you are set free from the law of sin and death
