Here is a third 'drums' excerpt from the soon to be released iGenesis video - a recreation of the full In The Cage Medley from 1986, featuring amongst other things, In That Quiet Earth, Apocalypse in 9/8 and Eggs Is Eggs!
I have said this before and I will say it again - Genesis' Second's Out version of Eggs Is Eggs is one of the most powerful, moving, beautiful moments in live rock history, ever. It makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up every time I hear it, and gives me goosebumps. I LOVE IT!
It may surprise people to know that I think this is extremely hard to drum to. I certainly find it very, very hard to capture Chester's sublime groove, sense of space, power and timing. He creates a perfect, lazy soundscape on the drums which fits with this Genesis epic perfectly. It is SO easy to rush it, and you need to lay back so much you almost fall off the drum stool! And that is before you even try to copy the various fills and add in the cymbal accents and that bass drum pattern. Chester is just THE MAN!
I have always had a lot of trouble with the HUGE fill he does just after 'Jerusalem' - I think this is my third YouTube video with Eggs in it, and I have approached the fill differently every time! Playing groups of four round the toms has always been a weakness for me. I hate them! I have the same problem on 'Duke'. Anyway, this time, I think I finally cracked it, and am playing what Chester played. More importantly, I actually nailed it in this, my first take of Eggs Is Eggs. Frankly, I nearly screamed out with joy when I walloped that china at the end and it was in time! I was so overjoyed I almost could not play the next few bars - I was shaking. I'm surprised that you cannot see even a flicker of joy in my face - I must have really been in the zone :-)
What amazes me is that Chester had the guts to play this fill live! I find it hard enough just trying to play along with him, but at least I have him as a guide and know when I have gone out of time. I cannot imagine being the guy on the stage actually playing this fill - I would be terrified of popping out the end of it in the wrong place!!
I realise Cage is exciting on drums; and Quiet Earth is even more exciting; and Apocalypse is of course a beast - but trust me, Eggs Is Eggs is just as difficult to play - though in a wholly different manner. I urge you to get hold of a copy of Second's Out and play along with it, and treat it with the same respect as the more obvious 'drummy' tracks.
The full iGenesis Cage Medley is almost ready for release. The video is complete, and the audio mix is now being finalised. Keep you eyes on my (or the iGenesis) channel - it will be out probably in the next week or two.
Enjoy!

TeddyZ!!! Dude, you were the reason I ever got into YouTube! I watched your vid of you playing Rush's YYZ when you were like 10 or something - you were incredible! Because of you, I started posting my own vids :-) It's great to hear from you again after all these years - you are a monster drummer!

@alegareca Well, as sure as Eggs is Eggs, THAT is an amazing compliment - thank you!
There are many drummers out there in Genesis Tribute bands that are awesome - it's far easier for me to sit in my room and do one of these recordings then be the guy on stage doing it all live!
Phil, Chester and Bill 'wrote the book' and created and played all these amazing drum parts, which we mortals spend hours trying to replicate. How many of us could have come up with these parts? Not me!

Excellent job, sir! This song always gives me the shivers....and I know it's tantamount to heresy to say this, but I prefer this version to the original!

@RonG40 I don't consider that heresy my friend! I have always felt that this live version was sublime, and if that's heresy, then I count myself a happy heretic!
Glad you enjoyed it!
