If you're looking for an insanely fast RC plane then the HobbyKing Rare Bear has to be near the top of your options-list.

Here are the first two flights which showed up two issues with the model.

1. the ailerons come right up to the fuselage so it's easy to accidentally knock them when launching. In the first flight, the left-hand aileron clevis became detached from the horn causing major trim issues.

2. a very small, very fast model can be awfully difficult to see against a gray sky and the Rare bear uses up a lot of sky, despite its tiny size. Make sure you have good eyesight before you fly this baby at speed!

Aside from that -- just keep the defibrillator handy and enjoy the adrenaline rush!

This is definitely a five-star flight experience!

  • I've been hinting to the Mrs about getting one of these as a Xmas present ;-) just hope she goes for it, if not i'll order one after Xmas because i've spent out after getting my last EDF ;-) Great flying Bruce and well kept together with the dodgy aileron mate, was that the stock ESC because i can't remember if you upgraded or not,Anthony Hand said the new stock of these had a better ESC in them and COULD handle the 4s now,not sure i would still trust them though and was hoping yours was stock.

  • @startazz After seeing the stock ESC in an AT6 FunFighter fail after just two flights on 4S I opted to replace the stock unit with a 30A HobbyKing one before I even flew. For $8 or so it's worth the peace of mind.

  • The one thing that I'm not clear on, is everything in the plane stock, other than the battery. And what size and c rating did you use?

  • @WSRebel2 If you look at the build video (part one of the Rare Bear review) you'll see that I replaced the stock controller with a HobbyKing 30A one. The stock controller will fail on 4S, despite HK's claims that it's been specially upgraded.

  • You're really stylin there, leaving the tags on your hat! ;^)

  • @G56AG A trend-setter, not a follower! :-)

  • great piloting.. I love the howling as it goes by, a scaled down noise right from Reno...

  • @GetRoKd Assuming the throttle is off, you estimate how far it will glide to touchdown. Right before it touches ground, apply just a tad bit of up elevator. That's called flaring out. It will save a lot of props, but not all the time.

  • Best way I found out to film fast planes is to use a video cam with 15-20x zoom....go 100 yards away and film it on zoom. It's easier to follow from that far away.

  • Noob belly lander question here. How do you land without the prop bearking? I have read not to use the brake function on the ESC and that the prop will move out of the way when it lands, but how does that work? I have the stock setup with an upgraded Turnigy Trust 45a SBEC.

  • I put some reflecting gold-coloured foil on the bottom of the wings, it helps me a lot to recognise the way it's lying in the air, not only if there is great sunshine. I bought this self adhesive foil in a kitchen-shop, it's meant to cover drawers, but it does it job on almost all my planes, gliders, e-gliders and so on ...

  • @Kjetilaf After I killed a 30A ESC (2-4S) on my rear bear (i bought this ESC on ebay) I put in a 40ESC (3-4S) from Hobby King. So far I have about a dozen flights with two of these planes, never ever any problems with the 40A. I fly the nano-tech 65+C. In the meantime hobbyking announced to have upgraded the ESCs for highC 4S batteries!

  • can you slow it down a little and do some sport flying? I honestly get bored with a plane that's just for speed. I love the look of it. Is there a Stock Military Bearcat rc?

  • lolz I had an aeleron come loose before, it makes it seem like drunk flying because the plane wags around, won't do quite what you want. it feels wierd.

  • WHY DONT I HAVE A PLACE LIKE THAT TO FLY?!!!

  • Nice little plane... Insanely fast! Mudman1959
