WOW! Not Just a Building
by Amy C. Mills
(27 minutes)
Visit the community-owned, volunteer-run WOW Hall in Eugene, Oregon! Threatened with demolition in 1979, the vintage 1930s hall was rescued when community members held a five-day benefit concert to buy the building. Since then, the WOW Hall has become a community gathering place and performance venue for all ages. Local bands find their start here, dance classes benefit from the wonderful dance floor, and the under-21 crowd can hear great live music. Includes live performances from punk to funk, swing to ska, and Spanish flamenco to Balkan song.
Featuring: Abakadubi, Courtesy Clerks, Kitka, Laura Kemp & TR Kelley, Lounge Derbies, West African Dance & Drum Collective and West Coast Rhythm Kings.
Screened on Oregon Public Broadcasting's "Oregon Lens" series on August 9, 2002.
