Ian Castro's Bleeping Computer Post
My laptop experiences random crashes and freezes. Lines appear across the screen during the crash and after the crash. Usually during watching videos, playing games, or looking for antivirus software. I checked with Dell and ran a hardware diagnostics test -- nothing is wrong with the video card. Sometimes smiley faces fill the blue blocks instead of diamonds or greek letters. I have scanned with Avast!,Macafee, spybot search and destroy, comodo anti virus, and windows defender -- nothing has been found.
Either your graphics card or motherboard. Pop out the video card, and put any other video card in (just grab some free cheap PCI one you have lying about or go to a bargain basement computer store or buy one on ebay for less than $10), reboot, go into Safemode, set graphics driver and resolution for new card, and if your problem goes away, it was the graphics card. If it doesn't, its the motherboard.

I've got the same problem. I'm running the PSAs right now and chatting with the XPS online chat support.
I've had the problem TWICE before. You just need the graphics card replaced; reinstalling the drivers won't help and the diagnostic tests return nothing.
On occasion I can boot up with no problems, but when I run anything graphics-intensive (games and videos) it dies.
Sometimes bluescreens because the driver couldn't be recovered from a timeout. Thanks, Dell. Lenovo, here I come.
