This is a measurement of the Sr-Y-90 check source, which is a pure beta emitter (no gamma). This particular type was also used to calibrate these meters under army conditions.

With the metal beta shield, the counter registers 5 mR/h and without it (this is the correct way how it should be measured), 20 mR/h which is a fairly strong emitter for being that small. :-) Anyways, with respect to the machine's last calibration date of February 2006, the 20 mR/h value is within the correct range, as the instruction manual shows. (Should be 18-21, or so)

  • I see that you already started testing the source :). Two metal plates are from stainless steel inox 316 (Ni:10-14% and Cr: 16-18% other is all Fe). With this source you can try the bremsstrahlung effect. I wanted to ask if you perhaps have the schematic for this geiger counter ?

  • @alfaradiation Yo, thanks for the comment. I've PMed you a response since it's too long to post it here.
