I've been a Special Effects Makeup Artist for over 20 years, but only done a couple projects dealing with animatronics.
I've been dabbling in cake decorating for little more than a year now and this was the first time I incorporated my work with my hobby.

This project was for a Medieval re-creatioinal society's Admiral's Masked Ball. I could tell you the story of why this cake came to be, but you would have to know the inner workings of the SCA for it to make sense, that being said, contact me and I'll relay that story.

The Cakes were made thus:
Base: Blue Velvet with blue and white buttercream frosting.
Pirate Ship: Butter Rum with butter Rum glaze. Cake made with Nordicware Pirate Ship mould.
Octopus: Red Velvet Cake with fondant covering. Details were airbrushed using cake gels and Vodka mix.
Crown; Gumpaste sprayed with gold airbrush colour.

Tentacles were foam latex skin covering Radio Controlled animatronic mechanisms (see other video).

If you have any further questions be specific and I'll try to answer them.
