CONGRATULATIONS to ARVYDAS SABONIS on his induction to the NBA Hall of Fame of 2011. Sveikiname, Arvydai!!!:

A. Sabonis visited F. Lubin while in Los Angeles (read: http://www.arvydassabonis.com/index_retire.html).
In current video you may see Lubin and Sabonis together in slide #34 (1989).
Amazingly, they even played similarly: footwork, hook shots, ball passes from center (~50 years separated their active game). Sabonis was Lubin's favorite Lithuanian player in the NBA.

Frank Lubin was a legendary basketball player and nurturing coach of American Lithuanian origin.
He went into Olympic history as a cornerstone Olympian who shared his Olympic dreams and experiences with many young athletes and community upon invitations from the Los Angeles Olympic Foundation LA84, http://www.la84foundation.org: "We were all fond of Frank Lubin and he was very helpful to us" shared Wanda L. Dowding, Executive Assistant to the President of LA84Foundation, 06-13-2008.

In 1936 Olympic Games Frank J. Lubin, 6'7", led US basketball team to the Olympic gold, and then headed to Lithuania, his parents motherland, to teach basketball fundamentals.

Mr. Lubin coached young Lithuanian players into great basketball team which won European championships in 1937 and 1939. The rest is history. Today everyone knows how competitive Lithuanian Olympic basketball is. Lesson? Even small nation of just 3.5 million may produce high quality action with timely teaching and dedication.

Mr.Lubin started his big-time career with UCLA, earned All-Pacific Coast Conference acclaim his senior year, graduating in 1931, and then went on to star in AAU competition for over 30 years. In later years Frank J. Lubin was inducted into UCLA basketball Hall of Fame

The legacy of Frank John Lubin lies in sharing not only his game knowledge, but also dedicating his time, resources and spirit to youth development. It goes beyond game coaching. As I communicated with people related to the Olympian, everyone graciously remembered the generosity, nurturing spirit and helping hand of Frank Lubin.

    > What a great man and tribute, you are indeed blessed!

    > And it is clear that his grand-daughter has already begun carrying on his legacy so naturally!

  • Thank you. I am humbled that Lubin's grand-daughter is delighted about the tribute. I put my heart and soul into the project and not all pictures have necessary quality.

She is herself a very special young lady and music performer. I agree with you that she has already begun carrying on his legacy so naturally. It is a blessing!

Lubin's contribution to Lithuanian basketball was immense! Many Lithuanians remember his winning shot in the European Championship of 1939 in Kaunas.
