APU get used rarely as our fuel costs are outragious. And if they are in a real money crunch we can use External Air or Air starts. External Air to power our AC packs at the gate.

cwa student: when we put the fuel levers to the run position usually 25 seconds after that you get the ding as the power is automatically switched to the engine generator. All the power briefly gets interupted and usually see the lights flicker. On the 80 it does it automatically. On the 737 you have to trip the switches.

How did the ding cut off like that that happened to me when I was on a AA MD-80 a couple of times wehn the engines go on it supposed to ding all the way "What was That?"

Actually the pilot shut down the air conditioning packs, because air is needed to start the engines. When the startup procedure is completed, the APU is shutdown and air is extracted to power the packs, and bleed air is added to the cabin for pressurization.

ahh you can actually hear when the pilot opens the fuel flow and the engines just power up!
