PLYMOUTH -- A 41-year-old Plymouth driver died after slamming his car into the brick siding of the Super Stop & Shop at Myles Standish Plaza early Saturday morning, Plymouth fire and police officials said.
Firefighters responding to the 6:45 a.m. incident found the driver trapped in his car and had to use a jaws-of-life to free him, said Plymouth Battalion Chief Kevin Murphy. The man was taken to Weymouth's Jordan Hospital, where he died.
"They had called for MedFlight, and they transported by ambulance to the Jordan instead. The guy didn't make it," Murphy said.
Murphy said the driver hit the right side of the Stop & Shop with "a big impact," causing "significant structural damage to the building."
"He hit the florists' department, and no one inside was injured," Stop & Shop spokesman Robert Keane said.
While the car did not actually enter the building, it did damage a brick wall and sheet wall inside, Murphy said.
Police are not releasing the man's name, pending notification of family members, said Police Captain Michael Botieri.
The Stop & Shop, located on Samoset Street, is open for business today. The store was not open at the time of the bizarre incident.
Asked to confirm reports by area business workers that the driver was a Stop & Shop employee, Keane said he could not give any more information until police became involved.
The front end of the gray car was severely damaged in the collision, and was later taken away on a flatbed truck.

  • You heartless bastards, I worked with Jim (the man who drove this car)my family and I got rides home from work on several occasions from. He was a nice guy who did something tragic, no one needs to be reminded of these events as we can never forget them. You people at the patriot ledger should be ashamed of your selves and should get some common decency and take this video down.

  • The only thing more tasteless than the fact that this video was put up here at all (and in all decency, it should be taken down) is the fact in the article Stop & Shop wants it to be known that it STAYED OPEN despite this tragedy. How much they respect (and love) the bottom line more than they respect their own employees! This video is voyeuristic and is muckracking at its very worst. I will encourage people to not read your paper.
