Trico Centre Expansion on schedule

Trico Centre expansion scheduled to be completed January 2010

The Trico Centre for Family Wellness expansion to its facility on Bonaventure Drive SE is on schedule and southeast Calgarians can look forward to enjoying a new ice surface in the near future. Construction begain October last year and is slated to finish January, 2010.

The ice rink is badly needed in southeastern Calgary. A 2006 City of Calgary report indicated the southeast is short 10 rinks. Young minor hockey players often have to travel to surrounding towns, such as Okotoks, to practice early in the morning, which is difficult for both the children and their parents.

The projects budget is $19.5 million. General Manager Brenda Smith says the fund raising is almost completed, have raised 95 per cent of its objective.

She notes that the project is coming in under-budget and a large contingency was included. The amount raised to date may be sufficient, but the fund raising team is continuing its efforts to ensure there is no shortfall.

Generous donors to the Trico Centre expansion include the City of Calgary ($9.5 million), Trico Homes ($1.5 million) and Southcentre Mall ($300,000).
