  • hey, im not tryin to hate on this car or anything...but 165 hp with a 5.0 seems really low, maybe its cuz i dont know a lot about older cars, the car sounds really good though

  • Today 165 horsepower is nothing, back in 1982, 165 horsepower was a powerful V8. The average V8 in 1982 was around 120 to 145 horsepower. These were dark days. The base motor on the Trans Am/Camaro Z28 was the LG4, rated at 145 horsepower. The (302 CID) 5.0 liter 2V H.O. in the 1982 Mustang GT was 157 horsepower (the automatic 1982 Mustang GT had a 120 horsepower 4.2 liter 2V V8). The 1982 Corvette had the L83 5.7 (350) Cross-Fire V8 (200 horsepower). In light of this 165 was pretty good.

  • isn't cross fire injection a duel tbi set up? not a fuel injection system! thats the was it was on the L83 at least, not sure about the 305 though.

  • Correct cross-fire was a dual TBI system however it is a fuel injection system. In fact this cross-fire '82 Trans Am came from the factory with "fuel injection" door handle plaques. And when the L83 was introduced in 1982 on the Corvette, Chevrolet touted in its ads - the return of fuel injection to the Corvette. TBI is no longer available on new cars it long ago was replaced by fuel rail "port" fuel injection type systems.

  • The reason for ceasefire is due to the lack of performance from the manifold. That sounds good anyway. I do not know when or where it started from. As far as common problems go the main thing is fueling in general and the TBs. The TB shafts get worn and cause vacuum leaks and more often that not the fuel pressure is low. We recommend 14-15lbs for Crossfire motors. For what it is worth, you can make a dual TB system (crossfire) run quite well and strong.

  • I too have seen those issues on a few cross-fire systems. However that's small potatoes compared to the issues older qjet 4bbls have - they need constant care and attention. I believe Jeff Koch a former writer at HPP coined the phrase ceasefire. You are right the weak link in the crossfire system is its restrictive heads and intake. Did you ever see the aftermarket x-ram intake which increased intake flow to 1200 cfm on the LU5 and L83 crossfire V8s? The company is now defunct unfortunately.

  • @cthiess19 you think that's bad? in 78 the 5.7s were only making 165 hp. lol. the reason for that being that the epa had passed regulations after 1970 that killed power. a mild cam swap would bring it over 250 hp :p

  • @ericpetersautos very nice, I think those crossfire motors are neat.

  • Nice car PIECE OF SHIT MOTOR.

  • @Chase1095 Actualy Net HP is the engine on a stand with all engine accesories (A/C, P/S, Alternator, water pump, ect) and a full exhaust system. There will be a drop in power when put in a car due to losses by the trans and rear (or tranaxle), roughly 20% loss. but the HP in the car could also be higher due to the vehicle its in. Gross HP was the engine on a stand with no engine accesories, no air cleaner and open headers. They still don't rate them on a chassis dyno yet. Wish they did.

  • @ericpetersautos Actually...most cars in the late seventies to early eighties had low horsepower ratings because of all of the emissions equipment that became standard in the midst of the fuel crisis. Catalytic converters and such dropped horsepower. Also horsepower ratings were originally gross but now they are net. Gross means that they were taken from an engine with no equipment on it, net is with the equpment and the engine driving the car. Kinda like a dynomometer. Great car. Love it!

  • Nice! Keep it original!

  • its all about the TQ not the HP

  • I'm getting one for free!!!

  • No matter what era we're in, the firebird always looks awesome.

  • @lamiac2411 that said, i bought a 400 small block for 300$ and some gaskets... so... the swap is almost always cheaper than even playing with the 305..
