The Best Way To Carry Out Sinus Irrigation:
What Is Sinus Irrigation And How It Is Administered?
Sinus irrigation is a home hygiene procedure for cleaning the sinus passages. Used in India for many years already, it's a means to gently remove mucus and bacteria blocking the nasal passages. It helps relieve inflammation of the sinuses, nasal congestion, allergic rhinitis, and even stop colds. With proper administration, scientific studies show that it's very effective and yields no undesirable side effects.
For those who like to refrain from taking traditional medications for sinusitis, this procedure is recommendable. Unlike certain drugs that can cause drowsiness and other side effects, none of those are around with this alternative remedy. It can be done right in the privacy of your home, and it doesn't cost a fortune. The ingredients for making the important component, the saline solution, can be found in the kitchen: lukewarm water and table salt.
There are various ways of administering sinus irrigation. One method requires no special device; your cupped hand is all that you need. But there are some methods where a special device for the task is needed. One of them is called a bulb syringe. This instrument enables the person to control the flow and pressure of the solution that goes to the nostrils and enters the sinus passages.
Another device commonly used for this procedure is the neti pot. The neti pot is just a small container that looks like a miniature tea pot. There's a spout near the bottom which is placed in the nostril to allow the saline solution to flow inside. The person simply adjusts the angle of the head and the pot in order for the solution to get through the sinuses with the help of gravity.
Although there are ready-made saline solutions for performing this, creating your own isn't at all that difficult. It's cheap and it's easy; a homemade solution requires simple ingredients. For each cup of lukewarm water, you simply need to add half a teaspoon of salt and a pinch of baking soda. However, refrain from using tap water as impurities in it may only aggravate sinusitis. Additionally, skip using iodized salt for the solution.
It's important to follow this recipe to attain the same salinity as a person's tears. The entire procedure should be done with the head over the sink. This way, dripping solution and mucus won't fall onto the floor. Cup one hand and fill it with the lukewarm saline solution. Snort it using one nostril, with the other nostril covered. Afterwards, blow your nose gently and do the procedure with your other nostril.
If you're going to use instruments like the bulb syringe or neti pot, just insert the tip of the instrument in one nostril. The other nostril shouldn't be covered to allow the solution to flow out of it. Press the bulb of the syringe or tip the pot to introduce the solution into the nasal passages. Tilt your head accordingly to let it pass through the sinus passages and go out of the other nostril. Blow your nose gently and do the same with the other nostril.
Administering sinus irrigation several times in a day isn't advisable. Doing so can deplete your nasal passages of their protective mucus lining. Also, consult your doctor if you wish to switch to this procedure in relieving inflammation of the sinuses, nasal congestion, allergic rhinitis and the like. If administered gently and properly, sinus irrigation can provide you with relief at once.
